Singapore General Election 2011

Haven had the motivation nor the inspiration to blog for a very long time, but the recent election fever got my brains and fingers working again.

The recent Xiaxue's post on her blog got me all worked up. I really really don't agree with all that she said. I love Lee Kuan Yew for who he is and what he did. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't be what we are today. And I am a firm believer of that!

But we all also know he hasn't been fair when it comes to playing politics. I don't like how the parties diss each other like we don't want the best for our country. There are valid reasons why the PAP is not all that popular and we just want another kinda voice in the parliament, someone who dares say "NO" every now and then, a devil's advocate or so they say.

And so what if Nicole Seah has more "likes" on Facebook? You like a page on Facebook because you want to follow the updates that comes with it, what they have to say, not always because you like the person or the group. Just like when you attend an opposition rally doesn't mean that you necessarily support them. Moreover, Lee Kuan Yew doesn't even maintain nor updates his own Facebook page.

Just saying, nobody is forgetting what he did! He is still my idol for he still exudes that aura of intelligence and authority that I am overwhelmed by!

I don't know what came over me tonight, I don't usually have that much of an opinion when it comes to politics. Thank God for Facebook, Twitter and blogs too for making it much easier to be heard.

The general consensus is that there is only one credible group of opposition this election. It's selfish to a certain extent to hope and wish that they will win their GRC this coming weekend because if that were to happen, I won't be the one "suffering" for the next 5 years, and deprived of certain upgrades, sometimes to the extent of being treated like a second class citizen.

It's unfortunate that the opposition group contesting in my GRC are jokers who don't seem like they're doing anything, only crossing their fingers that a miracle might land themselves this $15000 a month job.

Like what my friend posted on his facebook page, "Are these guys like, serious?" Fielding a team like that? With a 23 years old as their team leader? What were they thinking? Not just that, they haven been making the effort to make their presence felt like most of the other oppositions are doing. You can't expect me nor anyone else from my GRC to take them seriously right?

In any case, it can only be a win-win situation for everyone if this certain credible opposition that we all know who wins this coming election. An opposition is not there to oppose and obstruct all of PAP policies. If they are good ones, it will make no sense for them to not support it. After all, everyone wants only the best for Singapore. But if certain debatable policies come about, for e.g. the decision to let integrated resorts enter Singapore, it'll be good to have a certain opposition voice there to keep the policy makers in check. You never know, it might have been either Low Thia Khiang or Chiam See Tong's comments that got the government to implement the "$100 entrance fee for Singaporeans" policy and also execute the numerous anti-gambling awareness advertisements that we see on our televisions and bus-stops.

I like using soccer as an analogy, because I am a huge fan like many of you. There is a reason why many people hate Manchester United. It is human nature to want to support the underdogs. But there are also countless reasons why you should love Manchester United. Even as a die-hard Manchester United fan, would you want your team to win every competition year in year out? What would become of them if that were to happen? Arrogance? Complacency? I say so too! When another team improves themselves and beat them fair and square, you as a Manchester United fan would have to applaud and be glad too, because the best team has won!

The same for this coming election. There are many instances that this certain opposition team seems so much better than what the PAP are offering. And if the opposition wins this time around, the PAP will only come back 5 years later stronger right? If not they are not even worth a mention here. But if this certain opposition does well, we will have every reason to vote them back in the next election.

Just so you know, I am not anti-PAP. I will vote wisely this coming election, so should you.
